Winter Caps 03:59
I never spoke the words I was choking, I never sang the songs I was choking. I have a terrible way of never saying what I want to say, In the depths of the dark, I sit and wait. Three thousand words were running, parceled up and boxed for loving. I stored those words for keeping, Like those winter hats and those knitted caps. Take me in control I've got it, Take me out of control I've lost it. Leaves fall from the trees in the fall, I almost leaped and lost. Torn up from speaking, never releasing I saved us all. Take me in control I've got it, Take me out of control I've lost it.

Unawake 03:02
An arrow through this shape I'm in this space and are you speaking out loud, are you loving in sounds, and do your words come out through the slit in your mouth. I wanna hear the songs you sing, and the words you speak when no one else is listening, as the waves Roll in, and the shadows learn to swim. I'm Unawake, I'm Unawake, I'm unaware. Are the pieces hanging there and would I grab them if I cared. Instead I sleep, pretend to dream, pretend that all my thoughts don't stand for anything. And I hear the sounds your muscles make, and the gestures of your face, and the thoughts your lids contain. And things get slippery when wet, there's a thunder in my head and you've been knocking on the nest without a thought to where this ends. I wanna hear the songs you sing, and the words you speak when no one else is listening. As the waves roll in, and the shadows learn to swim.

There's a shadow on the wall of creatures big and tall and I've got my eye on the past. And the people that left to fast that I forgot to ask where they were going. I want to dance with them to fill all the pieces in before they fell off the edge. I want to be safe in bed underneath dark covers curled up the way I grew out in the belly of the mouth. Someday I'll be on the map and you'll regret the past you'll notice. And way back when those days when jealousy and hate stopped you from getting to know me. You should have stopped to blink you should have stopped to think about it. I want to dance with them to fill all the pieces in before they fell off the edge. I want to be safe in bed underneath dark covers curled up the way I grew out in the belly of the mouth.

I Began 04:12
Taking down the signs and the features, slowly in between. Touching life and love and the creatures and making families. The big growth in the big night and the sight of the changing times, and the sight of the changing minds. One foot, in the tunes and I move, I move, to the place, where I grave, and you lay but you don't stay. Take me back, take me back, I'm under attack, take me back. And when the time ticks down, and we're on solid ground take it back take it back. Burry my feet in the sand, back where I began, take me back, take me back. Take me back, take it back, I'm under attack, take me back

The clock in the corner I hear it ticking, and machines breathing up and down. I glance to the pictures I was living, and seconds change where I am now. It was the sound pulling the ocean down, crashing and buried found I lay. And the fog is gone with the summer sun and sprinkles on the left side of in slumbered sleep, underneath the sea. Half way across, I live for love and they wonder how far I'll take it. It was the sound pulling the ocean down, crashing and buried found I lay. And the fog is gone with the summer sun and sprinkles on the left side of in slumbered sleep, underneath the sea. The clock in the corner I hear it ticking, or is that me inside my head. And down in deep I am listening, to hear your message never read.

Grown 03:50
You lit the night a spark, a lantern in the dark. Soil sand and water, and grown ups start to ponder, the thought of something new. Someone to grasp when life seems doomed. Someone to howl at the moon, and you step to find a mother's womb. I wanted something I could not have, and in my body wondered, will it pass. Or will I wait here till the dawn and wait and wonder where I've gone. It comes for you. You were just five years old. You were dancing in your fathers hold, and he swept you from your feet, and left you waiting for release. If comes for you.

Red Berries 03:23
There's a second in my mind, when I used to hide in the forest behind my house. Where creatures come to stay, taking holiday dancing in the dark. Don't eat the red berries they'll kill you. And breaths sneak up on me when I hide among the trees and forget that time is ticking. You're the girl inside that frame and forty years have came and gone and still I write your song, as you said all along. I can hear your thoughts shifting. Don't eat the red berries they'll kill you. They, they are the heart, the hardest part.
8.
Take it from me, I'm livin' on the wrong side. And I'm runnin' away from time. And the sea, is pullin away from me, and my goals are coming clean. I see the light in your eyes and you are asking why. I take your hand and hold you tight. I step aside and say goodbye. Turning away, I wanna stay. I'm in and out, up and down, gotta get out of this place, cause the sea is pullin you away from me and my goals they won't come clean. I see the light in your eyes and you are asking why. I take your hand and hold you tight. I step aside and say goodbye. I say to the sea wash over me, don't forget me, don't forget me.

He was a snake in the grass, ready to attach, ready to attack, she was a bird, ready for flight and he was lurking in the night searching for the right time. And stones things she's grown to know like boulders from the ground, stuck and never found, until you dig down deep and strain and seek defeat and realize you are weak like the bird, at the feed. Slithering kinds I never liked and humans are a different kind that creep into your life, and they bath in gold and slither in and hold her hollow bone, trapped and groped. A Bead water falling fast and soaked into her body and time like an hour glass. I am like a child in my thoughts and in my mind I am lost. He was a snake in the grass, ready to attach, ready to attack, she was a bird, ready for flight and he was lurking in the night searching for the right time.

Sail Out 04:21
There's a home on the sound where the waves crash and pound 'gainst the clay where we carved our names. And the water runs deep under your feet and it runs in my blood as it streams through the heart of me. And we walked upon rocks, steady like a fox. Searching for the light to light the way. Sturdy with a rumble, lit within the tunnel we found our fate. Sail out, where the ocean meets the sound. There's a doe in the yard, where I once held my ground. For the creature of habit, chasing the rabbit that hides in my past, waiting to grab hold. Sail out, where the ocean meets the sound. I drove down roads so slippery as if I were sailing on the sea and dozens of drip drops fell to my feet. Sail out, where the ocean meets the sound.

about

LEFT is the sophomore album of Troy, NY based indie rock band Bear Grass. Originally from Fox Island, Washington, lead singer, guitarist and songwriter Katie Hammon, describes LEFT as a question of time and place. Having left her childhood home at age 17 to relocate to the right coast, Hammon has spent her adult life away from the people and places for which she holds great love and nostalgia. LEFT plays with the emotions of creating home while holding onto the past, recognizing that the people and places which once existed move along with time. Time and place have a great hold on our memories and expectations, our accomplishments, and acceptance of loss.

Bear Grass has performed across the east coast since 2013. Built around Hammon’s sultry voice and subtle, dark lyricism, the band has forged a captivating, melodic sound that lifts you up and gracefully lets you fall. Following their debut, Stories in Books, LEFT is no exception, each song transitioning through moments, taking the listener on a journey.

about

Bear Grass Troy, New York

Bear Grass attracts listeners with the quirky songs of Katie Hammon. Her sultry pipes leave them devastated, but the band’s blend of folk, rock, and homespun trip-hop soothes their wounds. Drawing on influences like Laura Veirs and Wye Oak, the music is sometimes subtly dark, but always thoroughly captivating and melodic. ... more
